Fireproof or Flame-Retardant Acoustic Panel?

Flame Retardant Does Not Mean Fireproof

Flame retardant, fireproof, and noncombustible do not describe the same performance.

A flame-retardant acoustic panel can still burn while a flame is applied to it. The purpose of the treatment is to stop the panel from continuing to burn on its own after that ignition source is removed. It is not a claim that the panel cannot ignite.

Fireproof and noncombustible are much stronger descriptions. They should be used only when the relevant test report actually supports them. A normal PET acoustic panel should not be specified with either word merely because it has received a flame-retardant treatment.

This distinction matters in a building submission. A report can show how a product performed in one defined test, but it does not turn an acoustic panel into a fire-resistance barrier for a wall, ceiling, or structural element.

Our US Class A and EN 13501 Reports

For products covered by our testing, we can provide reports for both of these classifications:

  • US Class A: a surface-burning classification commonly established under ASTM E84 or the related UL 723 tunnel test. Class A generally means a flame-spread index of 0–25. It limits how quickly flame spreads in that test; it does not mean the specimen cannot burn.
  • EN 13501: the European reaction-to-fire classification, normally EN 13501-1 for this type of product. The report states the exact Euroclass and, where applicable, its smoke and flaming-droplet ratings.

A Class A or EN 13501 report is evidence of performance under the stated test method. It is not by itself a fire-resistance rating for a complete wall or ceiling assembly, and it does not mean the panel is noncombustible.

The result also belongs to the construction that was tested. Thickness, finish, adhesive, substrate, air gap, and mounting method can change whether a report applies. Before using either report in a specification, confirm that it covers the exact panel and installation being ordered. We will send the corresponding report rather than treat every thickness and finish as identical.

Name the Standard Before You Order

Fireproof panel” is not a test standard. The useful request names the method and the result the project requires, such as US Class A under ASTM E84, or a specific EN 13501-1 Euroclass with its smoke and droplet ratings.

If the requirement comes from a building code, insurer, or consultant, send that wording as written. A project that asks for noncombustible performance, or for the fire resistance of a wall assembly, is asking for something different from a flame-retardant panel classification. Those requirements need the appropriate evidence; a Class A surface-burning report should not be substituted for them automatically.

Tell us the target before production. Flame-retardant treatment is selected according to the requested performance, and we will not describe a panel as meeting a named rating without the report for that panel.

What to Send for the Right Report and Quote

Send these details and we can match the panel, treatment, report, and quotation:

  • Quantity, thickness, and finished panel size
  • Product type, color, and finish
  • Whether flame-retardant performance is required
  • The named standard and target result, such as US Class A or the required EN 13501 classification
  • Any mounting or substrate conditions stated by the project
  • Whether the report must be submitted with the order

If your specification uses different wording, send the clause anyway. We will check it against the reports available for the relevant product rather than replace it with a broader fire claim.
